Brian Hands 1938 - 2024
It is with gratitude that we remember the life of Brian Hands, who passed away on 31 st
January 2024. Brian was a pioneer in cryogenics and a strong member of the BCC Executive
for many years. Brian was secretary to the BCC from 1979, for 10 years and then Chair from
1996 to 1999. Brian was a member of the Institute of Refrigeration from 1991 and arranged
for the IoR to help advertise and distribute the BCC Monographs, a series of useful textbooks
on many aspects of cryogenics. During his time as Chair, Brian oversaw the transition from
the BCC to the BCS, opening the way for corporate and private membership of the British
Cryogenics Society. Later it reverted to the BCC, to allow the incorporation of the
Cryogenics Cluster, which today has some 100 corporate partners.
