This year is the 200th centenary of the birth of one of the foremost scientists and engineers of the 19th Century, Lord Kelvin.
There are a number of events being organised to mark his centenary. The University of Glasgow events can be found detailed at University of Glasgow - Explore - Lord Kelvin 200.In September at the Orkney International Science Festival HOME - Orkney International Science Festival (oisf.org) [programme for 2024 to be released shortly] there is a talk on the “Life and Legacy of Lord Kelvin” by NPL’s Prof Graham Machin FREng and another on the “Laying of the Atlantic Cable”, of which Lord Kelvin played a pivotal role in its success.
Then, finally, there is a Royal Society discussion meeting in Glasgow on 24-25 February 2025 with the title “The redefined kelvin: Progress and Prospects” – programme to be released in the Autumn.
