The Cryogenics Department located at the University of Southampton has been conducting high quality research and consultancy for almost 30 years. Clients may remember us as the Institute of Cryogenics or as the Cryogenics Advisory Unit. Today we continue the same streams of work under the Research Institute for Industry (RIfI), which is collection of consultancy groups involved in a variety of engineering disciplines and based at the University. RIfI - Cryogenics can offer many services which include; A range of low temperature mechanical (compression, tensile and flexural), thermal (conductivity, expansion, flame) and physical tests (density, vapour transmission), all tested to ASTM, BS, EN, ISO standards and in accordance to the CINI specifications for insulation materials. Offer a sub-contracting service for testing which we do not conduct in house, e.g. impact testing, open-cell content. Building bespoke test apparatus in accordance to the required standards and modify them for low temperature testing. Testing a variety of materials at low temperature including; metals, concretes and a variety of composite materials and foams. Access to a Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS), for measuring the thermal conductivity, heat capacity and resistivity of materials down to 4.2K. Automated thermal conductivity measurements in accordance to ASTM C177 upon foam materials, (particularly for the Oil & Gas Industry) and on Perlite down to 103K. Liaising with industry to enhance the student experience during their studies, by offering jointly (Industry-University) supervised projects over a 6 month to 4 year period. Setup of ‘joint projects’, which require several specialist engineering disciplines (co-located at the University), to interface and to create a valid solution to an industrial problem. Facilities to run industrial projects which are suitable for publication. As always, we welcome the opportunity to work with you on your next project. Contact Dr Wendell Bailey ([email protected]) or Mr Thom Bostock ([email protected]) for further information upon any of the topics listed.
