The provision and development of high magnetic fields for research in a 5* Physics department. Research, measurement and application of superconductors (low and high temperature). Emphasis on magnet applications and the properties of superconductors and other materials in magnetic fields up to 21 T continuous and 70 T pulsed. Associated cryogenics and cryogenic engineering for low temperature research. Established over 60 years.
