encouraging the study, application and communication of science, technology and engineering
Founded in 1985 by Sir Martin and Lady Audrey Wood, The Oxford Trust is an independent charitable foundation and a company limited by guarantee.
The Trust pursues its aims by:
* encouraging economic growth through innovation and technology transfer
* developing projects that enthuse young people about science and engineering
* promoting activity that stimulates and facilitates public engagement with science.
In September 2005, the Trust opened Science Oxford providing a focal point for science and enterprise in Oxfordshire. Known more informally as SO, Science Oxford provides a home for the Trust\’s offices and for its newly refurbished handson gallery for schools and families (formerly Curioxity). SO also provides a stylish and contemporary venue for the Trust\’s what\’son programme with a wide range of events and activities to engage business, schools and the public in discussion about science.
The Trust takes particular pride in its independent and catalytic role at the heart of the science and enterprise networks of Oxfordshire.
Over the last 20 years the Trust has developed a range of innovative projects, a number of which are now delivered by others. It played a pioneering role in the development of both innovation centres for the incubation of high-tech companies and in the creation of venture angel networks such as the Oxfordshire Investment Opportunity Network. Oxford Innovation, the Trust\’s own spin-out company, is widely recognised as a leading provider of services to the knowledge-based economy.
The Trust has a track record of working in partnership with others. It played a key role in the development of Venturefest and was intimately involved in VenturefestOxford.net both as a founder sponsor and as manager of the day-to-day operation of the network. In May 2004 the network was integrated into the Trust\’s portfolio, enabling the Trust to offer a truly coherent and coordinated Oxfordshire network of organisations and individuals engaged in science and enterprise activity.
